The mom never seemed to really care that much about Doughboy whenever they were shown together. Furious clearly provided Tre with a good role model and part of his success can be attributed to that. One of the biggest themes was the importance about being a good father and how raising your kids right can not only better them but society as a whole. But it's such a short sighted way of looking at the situation, which is shown by what happens to Doughboy and Tre, respectively. When Ferris killed Ricky I wanted him to die as well. I found it to be very eye opening about gang life and showing how easy it is to get caught in that cycle of violence. It's kinda like you can do everything you can to get out of the hood, but you can still never get out. Ricky's death hit me really fucking hard, especially when his SAT scores were revealed. I see what you're saying about it being from the outside looking in. Some of it came off as unrealistic to me. There is a lot implied that isn't directly shown. I definitely picked up on some things from BITH that I maybe didn't the first time around. Just extremely well done and conveys the message without overdoing it. That scene when he pistol whips dude at the party. The scenes that show Kane as a little boy seeing his family involved in violence and murder, then when he grows up becomes the example that gets set for young Anthony. Even more when he jokes about it just days later. Obviously the scene after Kane gets shot, very disturbing. I guess when I see the scenarios as they're presented in Menace they hit a little harder. He's what Tre could have easily become without his father around. Tre from BITH is trying to overcome his surroundings and help uplift his friends while Kane in Menace has more cynical outlook. I see what you mean about how the protagonists are very different. Ok, so I went back and watched them both. The next film for discussion: Menace II Society (chosen by /u/TJ902) Late to the thread?
